Let me introduce myself.
Olivia Burton Mortgage Broker.
I've recently launched my broking business here in Newcastle, NSW in the middle of the most challenging financial times in recent memory. The question I am most often asked is "Why now?"
The answer is that I was already working as a mortgage broker for another company, and loving it. However, as a seasoned financial professional, with an entrepreneurial heritage, I became frustrated by the restrictions placed on me as an employee. I wanted to own the process and do things my way. I wanted to assist the broader community, not just the existing clients of that company. I wanted the opportunity to build a business that could give back to the community. Did I mention I wanted to do things my way?
I realised that I was treating my role as if it were my own business, which didn't work well given that it was someone elses company. The answer was obvious.
I started work in banking and finance in the 1990's and worked in merchant banking, retail banking and mortgage broking until 2008. With two young children I realised that mortgage broking was not the best role for me at that time. This was a time when mortgage broking meant a lot of out of hours appointments - where was Zoom when I needed it? I sidestepped into bookkeeping which led to further study and becoming an accountant. When I told people I was an accountant, their frequent response was "really?" I knew I didn't fit the typical idea of an accountant. Sure, I loved numbers, but I also loved people, music, social life, sport and interacting with my community. My first mortgage broking role was in Newtown because if I was elbow deep in finances and loan applications, I wanted to be doing so somewhere urban & interesting.
I always wanted to get back to mortgage broking it is where my love of numbers and my love of people intersect, and working again in this field is amazing.
I've been training for this moment for 30 years, and I'm beyond excited. My skills and experience have helped me to get here and now I want to help other people achieve their goals.
